Stateside

Ryan and I had such a great trip to the States!  We enjoyed great time with our families, friends, and the warm/hot summer.  As much as we love everyone in New Zealand, it was definitely hard to get on that plane to come back.  Three weeks flew by, and we were grateful for the great sunny and warm/hot weather we had the whole time!  Great catch up with friends, time by the pool, meeting for work, and of course a beautiful wedding!

Here are some pics I took with Instagram while we were in Indiana...

Women's Retreat

A few weeks ago we had our men's and women's retreats!  We had about 20 girls come to The Street City Church and spend the night.  It was great to meet all of the new girls involved in Bible studies!  We made pizzas in the kitchen and then dessert pizzas - which actually turned out pretty gross...  Our method needs some refining :)

Here are some pictures of all the ladies...

 Sarah, Joane, and Amy

Amy and a few new Bible study ladies

 Bronwyn and her new friend

 Harriet and Pearl

 Sara, Kudzi, Melissa and Emma

Zoe, Theresa, Ailsa, Rachel and Grace

After the pizza making adventure, we hung out all evening and just had fun.  The next morning Lauree and I both gave talks about serving and loving one another.  It was such a fun time, and I am always reminded of how grateful I am to have such wonderful women involved in Student Life!

My Day - Wednesday

I start my Wednesdays by preparing for a few Bible studies.

And then I get to meet with this lovely lady!  Zoe Cook.  She is awesome.  Zoe is graduating in a few weeks, at the end of this term, and I have been going through some graduate transition material with her.  It's fun to get to talk about transitioning to the work place and learning how to pursue Christ beyond University.  Zoe is planning to stay in Wellington and hopes to pursue her music in her free time.  She's already a pretty big deal in Wellington, so I'm excited to see where the Lord takes her.

Also on Wednesday afternoon is our weekly meeting!  We aim for this to be a safe place for Christians and non-Christians to talk about hot topics and faith.  Which usually means we end up with some big debates.  But we have been having a lot of new people, so that's exciting!  It's usually a little different than weekly meetings for universities in the States, in that it isn't really a "club members meeting", but for anyone.  At this meeting we were watching a debate between Christopher Hitchens and John Lennox about the existence of God.

Afterwards our staff team will spend some time together just connecting over our week and how we can encourage one another.  We try and stop working for a bit and be friends :)  Wow, that sounded really cheesy, but it's true.

On Wednesday nights, Ryan and I have our bible study at church.  It's really fun - we are studying Genesis.  Each week someone teaches on the passage and then we talk about our homework for the week.

Last week Ryan and I had the opportunity to teach (Ryan to the men, me to the ladies), which was totally nerve wracking, but a really cool experience. We seriously prepped for than 15 hours or so just to teach 30 minutes.  I can not imagine how pastors do that every week.  My mind was so worn out.  Anyway, like I said, good experience!

My Day - Tuesday

Tuesday!  Our team starts off our day with an hour of team prayer at a church in town.  It's usually freezing in there - hince Cherie's hat and our winter coats.  But it's so good to come together as a team and pray for the students on campus and for each others' ministries.

After prayer, I disciple one of our staff women, Cherie.  Lately we've been talking about leadership and project management - how to lead events well and students that we work with.  Cherie is hilarious, and keeps me on my toes.  I sound like an old lady when I say that.  But she's super fun, and it's great having another American to chat with :)

Next up, Tuesday morning is CSL (committed student leader) bible study with Joané, Zoe and Sarah.  These three girls have been involved with Student Life for 3 years now, and they are so great.  I love meeting with them!  We have been inductively studying the book of James this semester, and it has been really challenging for each of us.  But, they are such a joy, and I love getting to spend time with them each week.

This is a horrible picture of Sarah!  Ha, but it's the most recent I have I think.  Sarah is in her 3rd year at Vic and one of our student leaders (same as above).  I meet with her every Tuesday afternoon for discipleship and then we go sharing on campus.

We usually use Soularium, a great tool for starting spiritual convos with students.

And, lastly, I get to meet with this lovely lady last thing in the afternoon.  Emma became a Christian last year around this time, and we have been meeting ever since to talk about what it means to follow Christ and to share our faith.  We usually try and go sharing as well - she is always pushing me to keep talking with girls, after all, we could meet someone else just like her.  She is awesome and so excited to be learning about God.  I'm actually hoping to post a video of her testimony soon!

And that's my Tuesday!

FUSE - Cinco de Mayo

FUSE this past week was Cinco de Mayo themed!  I've talked about FUSE before here, but it's our monthly dinner with all of Student Life in Wellington (Vic and Massey).

We had a lot of new students this month with it being right after Autumn Retreat, which made it a lot of fun!

And then we made them all swing at a pinata.  It was hilarious.  Max and Ryan had rigged it so they could move it around, so everyone was really struggling to hit it.  But, it was great entertainment for the rest of us.

At one point the pinata swung and hit Cherie in the face - she was fine, but it was pretty funny.

Tiaan was a machine.  He went nuts, and almost got it open.

But Eileen had to finish it off, and it was a mad rush for the terrible pinata lollies.

Anyway, it was a blast, students are fun :)

Autumn Retreat!

This semester is going by so quickly!  This past weekend we were able to have our Autumn Retreat, where over 30 students from Wellington and Palmerston North joined us for an entire weekend to discuss the Gospel!  There was great teaching on how believers should live in light of the Gospel and all that Christ has done for us.  Sometimes we think of the Gospel as something we hear once, accept and then move on.  But, as followers of Christ, everything we do should stem from the Gospel - our desire to serve Christ, our love for one another, and our ability to communicate God’s love with others. We are so thankful Bob was able to come down from Auckland to teach us!

We played a lot of games...

I was able to lead a training on how students can naturally talk to their friends and family about Christianity.  It was fun to hear all of their hesitations in talking about their faith and help to overcome those.  And show that it doesn't have to be weird or awkward.

Ha, and Adam read his Bible.  I found this picture on my camera later, and I'm pretty sure it's staged.  But, we did try and give time throughout the weekend for students to spend time reading their Bibles and reflecting.

Ryan did a great job leading a mens’ talk - they are all still talking about it!  There were a handful of students that have been Christians for less than a year (and one for a few weeks!).  It is such a blessing to help them grow in their understanding of Christ and what it means to walk with God for a lifetime.

Here Daniel is giving a training on something.  I think it had to do with the Gospel :)

We ended up having good weather on Saturday, after it poured Friday evening.

Autumn Retreat is also important for new students to meet one another and start to be challenged in their faith.  Many have either recently come to Christ or they are beginning to really make their faith their own.  It is an exciting time to wrestle through what they really believe and what that should mean for the rest of their lives.  What does it actually mean to study engineering, biology, english, or education and honor Christ and to love their fellow students??

And we always have a blast as well.  Even though it was chilly that didn’t stop these Kiwis from taking a ride down the water slide into a nice dirty lake.

And, we played on the swings...

On Saturday evening we had a Summer Project trivia night, where we had a trivia competition with questions about our different summer project locations: Nelson, Australia, Fiji, and East Asia.  Here's Cody decked out in Fijian apparel.

We drank a lot of hot chocolate, and enjoyed smores by the bonfire.  For some reason the bon fire is always everyone's favorite part.

And on the final morning we had women's time, which was one of my favorites.  Dale shared with us what she has learned about contentment and finding joy in all circumstances.  She and Bob has lived all over Africa and now here in NZ, so she has some amazing stories - and some difficult things the Lord has brought them through.  It was such a joy having her and getting to learn from her wisdom!

And, a final picture of the group!  Overall, I think everyone had a blast, myself included. We have such wonderful students this year, and I feel blessed and challenged to be leading them.  From the tough questions they ask, to the encouragement seeing the pieces come together.  It's fun, I think I might have the best job :)

Manly Beach

My last post about Australia!  On the last morning we walked through the Botanic Gardens, where we saw bats - ewww, on our way to catch the ferry to Manly Beach.  We were told by a lot of people that we had to take a boat ride through the harbour, and also that we had to get to the beach.  So, this was the day!

We caught the ferry, and it was turning out to be a beautiful day.

We soaked up the sun for a bit at the beach, and it was nice a warm!  A nice change from New Zealand beaches :)

I think I made Ryan do this - get it - Manly Beach?  Sweet tan lines...

That evening we got back to Sydney and enjoyed a nice hot chocolate on the harbour.

Later that night we found a Mexican restaurant!  And by 'found' I mean we walked 30 minutes out of our way to hunt it down :)

But it was sooooo good!  Chips, salsa, guac, and tacos.  Yum.

And, another night shot, I love cities, they are so beautiful.
